Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to contest specific decisions from the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
