Unidentified Pink Ooze on Remote Tasmanian Beach Prompts Fears of Likely Algal Bloom

Agencies in the island state are working to identify a rosy sludge that has materialized on a remote shoreline, with a number of researchers anxious it could be an algae outbreak.

Extensive Occurrence Across Shore

The pink-tinged sludge was found on a stretch of Randalls Bay about 37 miles south of Hobart. A comparable ooze has also been recorded on areas of another local beach and a separate bay.

Specimens Gathered for Examination

Samples have been gathered and submitted to the Environment Protection Authority for examination. A spokesperson remarked that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural event in response to changes in minerals, warmth, rainfall or sunlight".

"These blooms are occasionally called red or pink tides because the outbreaks can color the water reddish," the representative noted. "Only some algal blooms are harmful, with many species functioning as a primary source of food for creatures in the aquatic ecosystem."

"The most common cause of reddish water in Tasmanian waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can create luminous nighttime effects at night."

Rising Occurrence Linked to Climate Change

Algae outbreaks happen naturally but their occurrence has grown in the past few years, partly due to climate change and contamination that combine to create food-loaded oceans ideal for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that usually serve as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a outbreak, there is a fast increase in their populations that disrupts the normal functioning of aquatic systems.

The expert said sea sparkle did not generate toxins similar to the organism involved in that devastating algal bloom, but it does consume microscopic animals and "many fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were most at risk.

"Typically one notices a outbreak of sea sparkle after a outbreak of something else, or for example a salmon or coral spawning event," she noted.

Demands for Response and Community Health

A campaigner, who gathered specimens of the pink sludge in the state, commented it appeared the potential proliferation had "expanded greatly" and suggested the aquaculture sector was the most likely culprit, citing like situations overseas.

"So Tasmania needs to issue a firm alert here, the officials and the regulators need to respond to this. We need to examine the samples we've taken and we need to inform the people here," she said.
